About the data

Where every layer comes from.

Radar (observed). NEXRAD base-reflectivity composite served by the Iowa Environmental Mesonet at Iowa State University, which also keeps the archive for the past-radar picker. Composites can be delayed or have gaps; a blank area can mean missing coverage. The timestamp is the requested five-minute interval. The alternate source is the NOAA/NCEP national reflectivity mosaic, latest scan only.

NWS alerts (official). Active watches, warnings and advisories from the National Weather Service: storm-based warning polygons from api.weather.gov, and county/zone shapes from the NWS watch, warning and advisory map service. Colors are our own; tap a shape for the NWS text.

SPC outlook (official). Storm Prediction Center categorical convective outlook for days 1–3, drawn in SPC's own colors. For a local forecast, open Your Weather.

Hurricanes (official). National Hurricane Center forecast cone, track, forecast points, past track and coastal watches/warnings for each active storm, plus links to NHC advisories. The cone describes uncertainty in the centre's track; impacts can occur outside it.

Temperatures and wind (observed / interpolated). Airport reports from the last two hours (METAR) from the NOAA Aviation Weather Center. Temperature colors mark measured points, not a continuous temperature forecast. Wind streaks interpolate reports within 150 km; coverage is limited between stations and over water. Only the radar layer changes when you select a past time.

Not an official warning service. Have more than one way to get warnings: a NOAA Weather Radio, phone emergency alerts and local TV or radio.
